Understanding and Experiencing Grid Congestion

Grid congestion affects more and more businesses: expanding, electrifying or feeding power back into the grid is not always possible any more. In this compact training you learn in half a day how grid congestion works and which solutions exist. After that, you experience it for yourself: in the serious game, you and your team build a sustainable region on a fully loaded electricity grid.
  • You understand what grid congestion is and what it means for your business
  • You know the solutions grid operators offer and the options behind the meter
  • In the serious game, you experience for yourself how choices in the energy system play out

About the serious game

After the theory, you play the serious game Energiesysteem, developed by Machiel Bakx of Energiegames and facilitated by trainer Roos den Hertog.

You play one of four municipalities in a fictional region, all connected to a single substation of the grid operator. Your assignment: over eight rounds, make all your homes, cars and businesses sustainable while electricity demand grows and transport capacity remains scarce. Along the way you discover the solutions yourself. Reinforce the grid in time, generate your own power and dampen demand with batteries, smart charging and energy hubs. The theory falls into place as you play, and you experience first-hand why collaboration makes the difference.

The game is played in groups of 4 to 8 participants and takes around 1.5 hours. With larger groups, several tables play in parallel.

Level of the training: no prior knowledge required. The training starts from the basics and is suitable for any entrepreneur who is dealing with grid congestion, or will be soon.

What you will learn

  • You understand the difference between power and energy, and why that matters for grid congestion
  • You know what grid congestion is and why it occurs
  • You can read the grid operators' capacity map and know what the colours mean for your location
  • You understand how a congestion management study works and what its outcomes mean
  • You know the congestion management products and which one suits your situation
  • You know the difference between existing customers and waiting-list customers, and what that means for your position
