Smart, grid-aware charging turns that logic around. Charging sessions are managed on the basis of grid capacity, electricity prices and the availability of renewable energy. The result is less strain on the grid, lower costs and a bigger contribution to a stable energy system. Grid-aware charging means aligning charging behaviour with the current state of the electricity grid. During periods of high grid load, charging is slowed down or postponed; when load is low or renewable generation is high, more power is made available. This lowers peak load on the grid, reduces the need for grid reinforcement and cuts energy costs for the charging party. For grid operators and large charging infrastructure operators, this is increasingly both an obligation and an opportunity.
Smart charging infrastructure can participate in the electricity market as a flexible asset. A fleet of charging points that responds collectively to price signals from the day-ahead or intraday market, or that delivers balancing services to TenneT, is both commercially attractive and supportive of the grid. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) is the ability to feed energy from an electric vehicle back into the grid or into a building. The vehicle battery becomes a flexible asset that delivers value outside driving hours. V2G is technically possible with bidirectionally chargeable vehicles and the right charging infrastructure. Market readiness is growing, partly driven by European legislation that encourages bidirectional charging.
